MĀMANE
Māmane is a Native Hawaiian tree endemic to Hawaiʻi. This tree can be found in the dry forests on the slopes of Mauna Kea. They yellow flowers on the māmane tree once bloomed in such quantities that from Hilo, it looked like Mauna Kea was adorned in a yellow lei.
The māmane tree is very important because it feeds some of our endangered Hawaiian birds like the palila. Without this tree, the palila is at risk of going extinct.
Native Hawaiians used māmane wood for many things such as; pou (house pots), koala (beams), ʻōʻō (digging sticks), kope (spades), ihe (spears), papa hālua (sleds), and wahie (firewood).
LIKO ʻŌHIʻA
MOKULEHUA X KAHUA ʻĀINA COLLABORATION
The liko, or newly opened leaf bud, of the ʻōhiʻa tree can be seen in different shades of green, red, and silver. Liko represents new growth and beginnings, both physically and energetically. The liko of the ʻōhia tree is the first to sprout through fresh lava rock, setting the foundation for other native species to thrive. After a great overturning event or upheaval, it is the calm and patient dedication that brings forth life. Our liko pin represents the strength and determination needed to ensure long lasting change.
