This design features the flowers of the kukui (candlenut) tree. In Hawaii kanaka maoli utilized every part of the kukui. Canoes could be carved from the strong tree trunks while the nuts were set afire and burned like candles. Dyes for kapa (cloth) were made from crushed nutshells and flowers and leaves could be made into lei.
